Santa Eulalia del Rio

Santa Eulalia del Rio is located on the eastern part of the island of Ibiza. In the Muslim period the area was called Xarc. The Catalan Santa Eulalia del Rioconquest changed the division of the island in the quarter similar to the current municipal organization.

After the conquest King James I acquired the rights to Pedro of Portugal and renamed it the King’s Room. This provided some legal problems in that the king in Ibiza, was lord of the Bishop of Tarragona, which, in turn, was a vassal of the king.

The name comes from the Santa Eulalia church built immediately after the conquest. It also has the only river in the Balearics, important at the time for the irrigation of the garden and flour mills. The town grew around the church on top of Puig de Missa.

Today’s church is from the sixteenth century and the annexed tower housed artillery that could defend the whole region. The township also includes the parish of Santa Eulalia del Rio, Sant Carles de Peralta, Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, Our Lady of Jesus and the Puig d’en Valls.
