Cathedral de Ibiza

Cathedral de IbizaAlso known as the Cathedral of the Virgen de las Nieves, the Cathedral de Ibiza is situated in the Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town. It was constructed on the site of the old Yebisah mosque.

The Gothic-Catalan style cathedral was built in the thirteenth century, and pays homage to both Santa Maria Maggiore and the Virgen de las Nieves (the latter being the patroness of Ibiza). Both are recognized because their feasts are close to August 8, when Ibiza was conquered. The Catalans built the church to commemorate this event.

In the seventeenth century its interior was completely remodeled in Baroque style. One can also visit the Museum of the Sacristy.
